The Glass Menagerie

I pour through electronic files
As I am prone to do this time of year.
Clicking,
Clicking,
Clicking,
I search
For the email message
That you used, to say goodbye
"To the Glass menagerie."
You never acknowledged that you
Had already been gone for decades.

To read between each word,
One more time,
To find the part that I am surely missing.
The place where it says,
I love you, I see you, you matter.
The part that reminds me that you were
My mother.
That I was
Your daughter.

Still, I won't find what I
Once hoped to.
It isn't there.

I'll forgive you again,
Move through
All Saints' and All Souls'

I'll call my children,
Make sure they know:
I love them.
I see them.
They matter.
